How to write an effective ‘flashback’ (and bring your reader with you!)

First a wikipedia definition in case not everyone uses the same term: Flashback (narrative), in literature and dramatic media, an interjected scene that takes the narrative back in time from the current point The Writers Digest has a great post about this issue in which they offer 3 tips: Your flashback should follow a strong scene. (so the flashback should not be your FIRST scene, though lots of TV shows start that way, with a scene from the future that makes no sense, and t

Horatio Hornblower by C. S. Forester

For those of you who have not had the good fortune of reading the original Horatio Hornblower series (I read them in my teens, and am re-reading them now) this is a teaser of a great BBC version you should get ahold of. As I continue to transcribe Casebook 7 ‘Principessa,’ I find that I am drawn to literature preceding the 1900s for my tone and even the words I choose. So I hope you enjoy this little treat from one of the great fiction writers of his time! #writing #research

Time to start writing that query letter methinks:  this site called AgentQuery had some interesting suggestions: Paragraph One—The Hook: A hook is a concise, one-sentence tagline for your book. It’s meant to hook your reader’s interest, and wind them in. The best way to understand how to write a hook is to read the loglines of the titles sold by agents in our free searchable AQ database. Paragraph Two—Mini-synopsis: This is where you get to distill your entire 300 page novel

    A streetchase

Book4, writing a street chase, and since 221B Baker Street doesn’t really exist in London (at least as a townhouse, not as a Museum), I’m working with the area instead. So, running South down Siddon’s Lane and then West towards Chagford Street – that makes sense right? I need someone from London to actually help me before I go ‘un-suspending’ people’s disbelief with erroneous directions. #writing #research #map #running #bakerstreet #london #chagfordstreet #portiaadams #siddo
